Well it’s the new year and you are looking at your diet and how you can improve it to help you feel better, lose weight and support your metabolic health.

The key to a successful diet or what I like to call an eating style is to avoid or limit poor-quality foods and add back high-quality foods.

Simple enough, right?

The biggest offenders for many of us are consuming overly or ultra-processed foods.

These are typically high in salt, saturated fat, and sugar.

Research has linked many of these foods to the root cause of inflammatory metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, dementia, and cancer.

The good news is that you can avoid developing these syndromes if you follow these 8 simple supermarket tips to help you define what’s “good” vs “bad” for you.

1). Don’t go shopping hungry

2). Shop the edges of the market first, only go inside the isles for clean-label products

3). Only buy packaged products with 5 or fewer ingredients and with ingredients you would cook with

4). Avoid buying products on the end of the isles as these are typically not healthy options

5). Any food with a logo you’ve heard of or has a nutrition facts panel has probably been processed

6). Any product with a functional claim is more than likely not truly healthy (ie low fat)

7). If it doesn’t say whole grain, it probably isn’t and if it does it may not be. Check for a carb-to-fiber ratio greater than 10 to 1, if it’s not then don’t buy it.

8). If any form of sugar is in the 1st three ingredients, it’s actually a dessert and you should avoid it.

So there you go, 8 simple tips to follow to help keep kick start your new year to be a healthy one with our goal to prevent you from getting ill by feeding your body what it truly needs.

You control your destiny and this year is the year that you’ll do what’s best for you.
