Ever feel like you are physically present but not mentally present?
Have you ever felt any of the following?:
- Slow thinking
- Difficulty focusing
- Confused
- Lack of concentration or motivation
- Forgetfulness
- Haziness in thought processes
- Low mood or apathy
If you answered YES to any of these, then you may be dealing with brain fog.
Brain fog is typically a grouping of symptoms that could be linked to many different things, such as:
- Lifestyle Issues: Poor sleep, not exercising, or too much stress
- Poor Diet: Eating an unbalanced diet with lots of highly processed sugary foods
- Alcohol/Caffeine: Drinking a lot and on a daily basis
- Digestive Issues: Constipation, bloating, gas, or belly pain
- Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, menopause, andropause, or general aging
- Immune Imbalances: Post-cold, flu, or COVID
The GOOD news is that there are things that you can do yourself to try to get out of the funk.
Here’s what you should focus on:
Rehab Your Diet:
Look at what you are currently eating & work to remove any of the following: gluten, dairy, sugar, MSG, artificial sweeteners, & highly processed foods. Then replace them with nutrient-dense whole foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, wild-caught fish, pastured eggs, clean animal proteins, extra virgin olive oil, and herbs & spices.
Focus On Your Sleep:
Create a sleep sanctuary in your bedroom by making the room as dark as possible, removing electronics & keep the room at 65-68 dF. Set up a nighttime ritual of taking an Epson salt bath, reading a real book on paper, stretching, or doing breathing exercises. Go to bed at the same time every night & wake up at the same time each morning.
Drink Enough Fluids:
Dehydration is something that you can easily rectify. Target drinking 1/2 your body weight in fl oz of water each day. Ideally, filtered water you drink from a glass or stainless steel container. Add this “cocktail” to your morning routine when you 1st get up…the juice of 1/2 lemon, 1/4 tsp Redmond sea salt & 8 fl oz of organic coconut water.
Limit Alcohol/Caffeine:
I know this one is not easy, but you’ll be much happier after you’ve done this. Take baby steps & try reducing the amount you drink each day by 1 until you are at zero. Try staying off until you start to see your fog lift.
Time To Destress:
We live in a hyper-focused and overly stressed world that can become too much. Be sure to allow yourself time every day to do NOTHING. Focus on your breath, look at nature, or close your eyes and just relax. Meditate, do yoga, or do simple stretching.
Get Moving:
Target doing exercise or some form of movement for at least 20 minutes daily. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Go for a walk, walk up and down your staircase, or do yard work. The key is to move which allows your blood and lymph to flow to assure everything is flowing and delivering nutrients to where they are needed.
Go ahead & give these suggestions a try. Hopefully, you will start to feel your fog lift & your clarity, focus, and motivation will all comeback.
Should it not, then please seek out assistance from a medical professional to help rule out anything serious.
No one should have to live life feeling “off” and you don’t have to.
