🦠 When you hear the word microbiome, you typically think about your gut microbiome.

But did you know that you have multiple microbiomes?

You have these in/on your 👄 mouth, 🧴 skin, 👁 eyes, 👃🏻nose, 🥕 genitals & 🫁 respiratory tract.

(For today’s blog, I’ll just focus on your oral (mouth) microbiome.)

Your microbiomes are made up of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses.

Each with its own specific purpose & function to support (or hinder) your health.

There are both “good” & “bad” species of these.

The key is to have a net positive balance with more “good” vs “bad” organisms to support positive overall health vs the opposite which will lead to poor health.

Research has shown that if your oral microbiome is off it can lead to 🧠 memory issues, skin problems, joint & 💪🏼 muscle issues.

The good news is, as with your gut, you can optimize your oral microbiome too.

Your mouth is the very first entry point for 🫘 food, 🏭 toxins & 🦠 microbes, so you want to think about it the same way as you do your gut.

Feed it with the right foods & focus on the right lifestyle practices & you’ll be in a great place.

Here are some tips on how to do it:

  • 🥗 Eat a wide and diverse diet with lots of nutrient-dense whole foods
  • 🌿 Add in polyphenol/antioxidant rich spices like clove, cinnamon & oregano
  • 🍌 Add in resistant starches like green bananas, unripe plaintains, & lentils
  • 🍭 Try to avoid as much added sugar & processed carbs as possible
  • 🍋 Try to avoid consuming too many highly acidic foods
  • 🍜 Increase your intake of fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi & pickles
  • 💪🏼 Exercise at least 15-20 minutes per day to keep your blood flow moving
  • 😫 Work on stress reduction techniques like meditation and yoga
  • 🪥  Use toothpastes that don’t contain ingredients that you can’t pronounce
  • 🦷 Floss everyday
  • 👅Use a tongue scraper when you 1st wake up to remove excess bacteria

When you give your oral microbiome the TLC it needs, it will love you back & hopefully you’ll start to see improvements with the other microbiome too as they are all connected.
